SUMMARY:The Producer's Lab: Mix 001 with One Leg One Eye
DESCRIPTION:The Producer’s Lab: Mix 001 with One Leg One Eye\nSession will start at 7:00PM sharp\nSession will end by 8:30pm\n$10/$20/XX\nPlease sign up on eventbrite\n15 spots available with room for 5 observers \nThe Producer’s Lab is a production focused series facilitated by sound artist Anju Singh with a featured guest Producer working in sound and music in the areas of experimental\, electronic\, sound art\, improv\, and noise contexts in each session. Sessions will include a demonstration of production techniques followed by discussion and analysis of submitted segments provided by selected participants.  \nTo submit a segment of a track for playback\, analysis\, feedback\, and discussion during the session\, please send a wav file to info@anjusingh.com and please include the timestamp for 2-3 minutes to playback during the session. A note that number of segments shared during the session will be dependent on session time. \n  \n \nMix 001 will feature One Leg One Eye\, the project of Ian Lynch (founding member of Irish group Lankum). One Leg One Eye explores submerged leylines of music and song\, drawing on the raw aesthetics of black metal\, noise and drone\, while also being deeply embued with a sense of history and myth. In live performances he is joined by score composer and veteran noise-monger George Brennan (BB84\, Melodica Deathship\, Cholera House). \nTheir Debut album …And Take The Black Worm With Me (released on Nyahh Records in 2022) is a slow burning suite of five expansive songscapes that has found its audience largely by word of mouth. Partly recorded in an abandoned Dublin factory where his father worked when he was a child\, Lynch’s harrowing vocals are underpinned by vast pillars of uileann pipe drones\, overlaid with effects and field recordings to conjure up a sound that is at once dark\, mysterious and ultimately transcendental. \nFor this session\, One Leg One Eye will be sharing production techniques explored in their yet-to-be-released upcoming record. This session will provide a sneak peak into the album. \nPlease note that this event will NOT be a live performance of One Leg One Eye’s material\, but we invite you to please join us for their concert the next night at KW Studios: https://www.showpass.com/vancouver-noise-fest-presents-one-leg-one-eye-ireland/. \n  \n~8EAST ACCESS STATEMENT ~ \nThe 8EAST social space for new culture is a project of the NOW Society\, located on the Territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm\, Skwxwú7mesh and səlil̓wətaʔɬ Peoples\, in Chinatown\, in the DTES\, in Vancouver. \nWe are committed to making 8EAST a safe(r)\, welcoming and more accessible space. SUMMARY:Improvisation Workshop with Allison Burik and Fahmid Nibesh

Our workshops are for improvisers of all levels of ability and ranges of experience\, regardless of gender\, gender identity and expression\, sexual orientation\, disability\, physical appearance\, body size\, age\, race or religion. We protect privacy in our workshops and adopt the We Have Voice Collective Code of Conduct. Read more about NOW workshop policies here.\n\n\n\nAllison Burik’s work as a leader sees the multifaceted musician-composer blending a plethora of influences and approaches into an engrossing and mythologically informed whole\, often inspired by women and non-binary characters throughout folktales\, lore\, and real-world history. While atmosphere is the clear\, driving force behind many of their compositions\, they also draw on aspects of free improvisation\, the darker end of ambient\, and folk musics. Burik superimposes textural phrases of alto sax and bass clarinet\, threading in their limpid vocals\, field recordings\, subtle electronic treatments and even guitar.\n\nFahmid Nibesh (based in Tiohtià:ke/Mooniyang/Montréal) is an improviser primarily working with guitar\, percussion instruments\, electronics and voice. Whether alone with his instruments or in tandem with others\, somatic attunement with his environment is at the forefront of his practice. Currently\, he is fascinated by how feedback (via contact mic) informs and activates the geometry of objects and his real-time interaction with them.\nCellist\, Guitarist\, and Composer Fred Lonberg-Holm enjoys working with a wide variety of musicians in as many situations as possible. He also leads a revolving cast large ensembles under the name Lightbox Orchestra. Equally comfortable playing in indie rock bands as they are experimental music festivals\, the multifaceted musician blends a plethora of influences and approaches in their own work. Their recent debut solo album\, Realm\, explores the sonic possibilities of the woodwinds through electronics and contact microphones\, resulting in soundscapes that are both earthy and alien. Visiting from Montreal\, as part of the Trading Places: Un Échange program. allisonburik.com \n  \nFahmid Nibesh (based in Tiohtià:ke/Mooniyang/Montréal) is an improviser primarily working with guitar\, percussion instruments\, electronics and voice. Whether alone with his instruments or in tandem with others\, somatic attunement with his environment is at the forefront of his practice. Currently\, he is fascinated by how feedback (via contact mic) informs and activates the geometry of objects and his real-time interaction with them. SUMMARY:The Powers / Modale with Liam Murphy
DESCRIPTION:By Donation $10/$20/$xx/FREE \nThe Powers (Emily Pelstring\, Katherine Kline\, and Jessica Mensch) as scholars and artists examine the occult and spirituality as places that are “legitimate forms of experience” through music\, performance\, and video work. Their performance pulls in the audience\, playing on ritual and feminized archetypes including the witch\, the crone\, and the hag. They explore places of taboo within dominant ways of knowing—in this case\, of the occult\, magic\, paganism\, and mediumship. But what does examining them and their exile from the mainstream offer to us in this time of upheaval\, and what does untangling resistance to this teach us about other invisibilized practices? The Powers work with improvisation and play\, creating a ritual space in their performances including reverence\, humour\, and live participatory experiences. \nModale is the improvisational duo of John Brennan (percussion) and Justin Patterson (live vocals/effects). Formed during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown in Vancouver\, their collaboration draws on nearly two decades of involvement in the city’s experimental music and art communities. Modale’s practice centers on spontaneous composition\, treating each performance as a site-specific response to the acoustic\, spatial\, and historical qualities of the environment. Their work blurs the lines between sound and place\, using improvisation to explore the unique resonances of each setting. \n~ 8EAST ACCESS STATEMENT ~\n\nThe 8EAST social space for new culture is a project of the NOW Society\, located on the Territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm\, Skwxwú7mesh and səlil̓wətaʔɬ Peoples\, in Chinatown\, in the DTES\, in Vancouver.\n\nWe are committed to making 8EAST a safe(r)\, welcoming and more accessible space.
