~8EAST Access Plan~
The 8EAST Social Space for New Culture, @ 8 East Pender Street, Vancouver, is a Project of the NOW Society. We are committed to making 8EAST a welcoming, more accessible and safer(r) space. We do not tolerate discrimination based on age, gender, neuro a-typicality, disability, place of origin, cultural background, religious beliefs, or sexual orientation. We recognize that access is an ongoing and evolving discussion and acknowledge that this statement may be insufficient.
The 34 inch wide main entrance to 8EAST has a threshold of approximately 0.5 inches high. There is no door automation. There are no ramps or stairs to navigate. Internal floors are smooth concrete. Provided seating, wooden stackable chairs without armrests, is easily movable to create equitable seating location accommodations. 8EAST has two exits, one the main door and the other at the rear of the unit in the storage room; both exits always remain clear during public events. A fire extinguisher and naloxone kit are near the front door and a first aid kit is located in the cabinet above the sink in the unit bathroom. Earplugs and masks are available upon request. Outdoor events are held in a 30ft square plaza on concrete pavers, some are uneven and missing. Outdoor events often use the wooden chairs and cloth barriers delineating the area of usage.
8EAST has a wheelchair accessible, non-gendered toilet in the unit, with a door width of 35 inches. Two additional toilets are located in the adjacent hallway. They are not wheelchair accessible. Service animals are welcome. If you are attending an event and require translation and language interpretation or there is an event with food and you have allergies, please contact now@nowsociety.org.
The NOW Society has adopted and follows the We have a Voice Code of Conduct www.wehavevoice.org.
