ABOUT THE MUSIC:
4 (trio) is a self-titled album of entirely improvised music, recorded in a living-room one summer afternoon in 2021. The trio is Adrian Avendaño on drums, Matthew Ariaratnam on guitar & pedals, and Lucy Strauss on viola.
Adrian, Matthew, and Lucy play together in various constellations in the improvised & experimental music scene of so-called Vancouver. Since 2020, they meet up to play improvised music whenever pandemic restrictions allow. Their very first play sessions took place in idiosyncratic locations like garages and rooftops. For the making of this album, Lucy cycled over to Adrian’s & Matthew’s house to play some music in their living room. It was a spur of the moment decision to click the record button and the resulting recordings are released here in chronological order, just as it happened.
This album will be released with a launch performance on July 22nd 2022 at 8EAST, located in historic Chinatown in so-called Vancouver’s downtown eastside. The music to be played at the launch will also be entirely improvised and will never be heard again because we decided not to click the record button.
The garages, rooftops, and living-rooms mentioned above are all situated in so-called Vancouver, Canada. We gratefully acknowledge that this city is located on unceded ancestral land and waters of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
