THE SODA CRACKERS

The Soda Crackers, Sue Malcolm, Don Fraser and Stud MacDonald, serve up a spicy gumbo of bluegrass, vintage country, swing and jazz. These long time musical cohorts have played together and been active in the Vancouver bluegrass scene as performers, teachers and mentors for over twenty five years. They lead a monthly bluegrass jam for beginners at the ANZA Club, where everyone is welcome to participate. www.thesodacrackers.com

Sue Malcolm has been a mainstay of the Vancouver folk and bluegrass scene since 1980 as a performer, instructor and organizer, and a founder of The Pacific Bluegrass and Heritage Society. Recognized for her ability to help beginners gain confidence and enjoy making music in a group setting, Sue developed the Slow Pitch Jam method of teaching bluegrass jamming. Since 1996 Sue’s monthly Slow Pitch Jams at the ANZA Club in Vancouver have been drawing huge crowds. She has taught beginner guitar and bluegrass jamming at many music camps including the BC Bluegrass Workshop (now Nimblefingers) and the Georgia Strait Guitar Workshop.

Don Fraser’s abilities run the gamut from country and bluegrass to swing and gypsy jazz. As part of the duo Swingamajig with son Michael, Don performed at jazz festivals around North America and Europe. Don has won numerous awards including first place at the Western Canada Guitar Championship. He is well respected in Western Canada as a teacher, performer and arranger, and has been a regular instructor at the Georgia Strait Guitar Workshop, Moveable Music School, BC Bluegrass Workshop and Vancouver Island Guitar Workshop.

Before becoming a ‘roots’ bassist, Stu MacDonald was well known in the Vancouver music scene as a member of such bands as Crawfish Fiesta, Helen Gone and The Beverly Brothers. Making good use of his razor-sharp wit, Stu made it his mission as a member of Highrise Lonesome, to revive the role of the bassist-comedian so popular with early bluegrass and country bands. The Soda Crackers provides even more opportunity for Stu to utilize his vast musical knowledge, which can include singing on occasion.
